Safe Backing and Turning

Safe Backing and Turning

Backing and turning are the two most frequent causes of vehicle accidents. Backing accidents represent more than half of the motor vehicle accidents reported by many of the nation’s largest fleets on an annual basis. This figure is astonishing since many of these drivers are highly skilled professionals. Backing is our weakest skill because we spend 99 percent of our time driving forward. Every driving environment presents its own set of variables that may contribute to hazardous situations. The majority of backing accidents share some common causes. Some backing accident contributors include: backing unnecessarily, vehicle design, infrequent backing practice, blind spots, inadequate backing preparation, and inadequate information. Common turning factors that contribute to vehicle accidents include blind spots, speed, improper signaling, improper use of mirrors, and failure to check the intersection. A consistent defensive approach to backing and turning can reduce the likelihood of driver error. This training is designed to serve as a training tool for new drivers as well as veteran drivers.
