Wagner Construction Inc. will educate staff on trenching and mining risks before they fill the very first bucket of soil this construction season, implement comprehensive site-specific safety measures, and has hired a full-time safety officer to shield workers from deadly excavation hazards. Wagner Construction agreed to change its workplace practices and preparation in a lengthy arbitration deal with the US Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration after three North Dakota work site checks in 2019 and 2020 found the company’s workers vulnerable to excavation hazards. The deal calls for the Minnesota-based excavation firm to pay a $380,000 fine and to provide job site workers, management, and supervisors with immediate instruction on trenching and excavation risks. appoint a third-party safety consultant; provide OSHA with the addresses of all of its 2021 job sites to enable inspection for compliance with trenching standards; and create a corporate safety committee.
