Training Process

All hazmat employees must be retrained, tested, and certified at least once every three years. New employees or those assuming new hazmat responsibilities must complete initial refresher training before performing hazmat functions unsupervised. Depending on the responder’s role and level of involvement, additional training may include emergency response drills, advanced DOT hazmat updates, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Employers are also responsible for site-specific training that addresses their unique hazard prevention procedures, equipment, health and safety policies, and emergency protocols. All company-specific training should be thoroughly documented.
