Training Process
This course is designed to help employees meet the initial and recurrent Hazardous materials introduction training requirements for hazardous materials (HAZMAT) handling as mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). A complete HAZMAT training program should include: General Awareness instruction (basic or advanced level) Function-specific and modal-specific training Security awareness training HAZMAT safety basics Understanding of Transportation HAZMAT regulations Driver training for motor vehicle operators, if applicable All HAZMAT employees must receive training, assessment, and certification within 90 days of employment or upon assuming new HAZMAT responsibilities. Until initial training is completed, employees may only perform HAZMAT functions under direct supervision. Recurrent training is required at least every three years, while certain air carrier employees must follow FAA requirements for biennial retraining. Employers are also responsible for maintaining detailed records of all HAZMAT training activities. Depending on the employee’s role, additional training may be required under OSHA, EPA, or other regulatory standards to ensure safe handling, transportation, and emergency response related to hazardous materials.
