Training Process
Hazmat training must cover key areas to ensure safety and compliance. This includes General Awareness training (basic or advanced), Function-specific and Modal-specific training, Safety training, Security awareness training, and in-depth security training if a security plan applies. Employees who operate motor vehicles must also complete Driver training. Hazmat employers are required to train, test, and certify each employee within 90 days of hire. Recurrent training must occur at least once every three years. New or reassigned employees may perform hazmat duties only under direct supervision until training is completed. DOT mandates retraining every three years, while the FAA requires air carrier employees to be retrained every two years under 14 CFR. This course provides instruction for personnel involved in shipping hazardous materials by air. Additional training may be necessary depending on the employee’s role and responsibilities, including emergency response training, extra DOT hazmat training, or instruction in using personal protective equipment (PPE). Employers must also provide site-specific training covering company procedures, hazard prevention, emergency protocols, and proper use of equipment. All site-specific training should be well documented.
