Training Process
Each Hazmat Employer is required to train, test, and certify every Hazmat Employee within 90 days of employment. Recurrent training must be completed at least once every three years. New employees or those assuming new hazmat responsibilities must receive initial training within 90 days. Until trained, employees may perform hazardous materials functions only under direct supervision. DOT mandates retraining and testing every three years, while the FAA requires air carrier employees to complete retraining every two years. This course covers the shipping requirements for personnel handling hazardous materials by vessel. Depending on a worker’s role, additional training may be required, such as emergency response, further DOT hazmat courses, or training in personal protective equipment (PPE). Employers must also provide site-specific training that addresses their hazard prevention policies, use of equipment, safety procedures, and emergency protocols. All company-specific training should be documented and maintained.
