Training Process
Employers are required to train, test, and certify all hazmat employees within 90 days of employment. Recurrent training must occur at least every three years. New employees or those assuming new hazmat responsibilities may only perform hazmat functions under direct supervision until they complete initial training. Air carrier employees, per FAA regulations, must receive retraining every two years. Employers must maintain complete records of all DOT and FAA-required training. In addition to external training, employees should receive site-specific instruction from their employer, focusing on company procedures, equipment use, hazard prevention, and emergency response. All site-specific training should be properly documented.
