Training Process

Hazmat employers are required to train, assess, and certify every hazardous materials employee within 90 days of hire. Refresher training must be provided at least once every three years. Employees who take on new hazmat responsibilities must also complete initial training within this timeframe, and until then, may perform their duties only under direct supervision. DOT mandates retraining and testing at least every three years, while the FAA requires air carrier employees to undergo training every two years. Employers must maintain proper training records to demonstrate compliance. Additional training may be required depending on your role, such as OSHA, EPA, or other hazardous materials response instruction. Beyond external training, employees should also complete site-specific training provided by their employer, which should focus on company-specific hazard prevention procedures, equipment usage, health and safety policies, and emergency protocols. This training should be thoroughly documented.
