Training Process

This course is part of the comprehensive DOT HAZMAT training requirements curriculum, which also includes general awareness training (basic or advanced), function-specific and modal-specific training, and, if applicable, in-depth security or driver training. Employers are required to train, test, and certify all hazmat employees within 90 days of hire or when assuming new HAZMAT responsibilities. Employees may perform HAZMAT-related duties under direct supervision until training is completed. Recurrent training must be conducted at least once every three years for all DOT-regulated hazmat employees, while air carrier employees must be retrained every two years under FAA regulations. Employers must maintain accurate training records to demonstrate compliance. Additional Training Depending on your role, employers may require supplemental training, including OSHA, EPA, or other hazardous materials response courses. Beyond external training, students should receive site-specific instruction from their employer that reflects the company’s procedures for hazard prevention, emergency response, and the proper use of equipment and personal protective gear. This employer-provided training should be carefully documented to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
