Learning Objectives
- Understand the HAZMAT definition on the highway and its implications for transportation
- Learn proper HAZMAT segregation procedures during highway transport
- Follow DOT regulations for HAZMAT highway operations and compliance
- Recognize risks associated with improper segregation and ways to prevent incidents
Training Process
Hazmat training must cover several essential areas to ensure compliance and safety. This includes General Awareness or familiarization training, Function-specific training, Safety training, and Security awareness training. Where applicable, in-depth security training is required if a security plan is in place, and Driver training is mandatory for every hazmat employee operating a motor vehicle. Hazmat employers must train, test, and certify each employee within 90 days of hire. Recurrent training is required at least once every three years. Highway carriers subject to the HMR may not transport hazardous materials unless all involved hazmat employees have received the required training and testing. Until initial training is completed, employees may perform hazmat tasks only under direct supervision.
