Training Process
A complete DOT Hazardous Materials training program must cover several key areas to ensure compliance. This includes General Awareness training, either basic or advanced, Function-specific and Modal-specific training, and Security awareness training. Safety awareness training is coming soon and may be added to future curricula. Where applicable, employees may also need in-depth security training or driver training for motor vehicle operators. Each Hazmat employer is required to train, test, and certify employees within 90 days of hire. Initial training must also be completed for employees taking on new hazmat-related responsibilities. Until training is complete, employees may perform hazardous materials tasks only under direct supervision. DOT mandates retraining and testing at least once every three years, while FAA air carrier employees require training every two years. Employers must maintain thorough training records for both DOT and FAA compliance. Depending on the role, employers may require additional training, such as OSHA, EPA, or other hazardous materials response courses. Beyond third-party training, employees should receive site-specific instruction from their employer. This training should focus on the company’s procedures for hazard prevention, the use of site-specific equipment, health and safety policies, and emergency protocols. All site-specific training must be properly documented.
