Training Process
This course is part of the DOT Hazardous Materials training program, which includes General Awareness, function-specific training, security awareness, and other applicable components such as modal-specific or driver training. Employers are responsible for ensuring that hazmat employees are trained, tested, and certified within 90 days of starting work or taking on new hazardous materials responsibilities. Recurrent training is required at least once every three years to maintain compliance with DOT regulations. For employees involved in air transport, the FAA requires retraining every two years under 14 CFR. Until initial training is completed, employees may only perform hazmat-related tasks under direct supervision. Employers must also maintain proper training records to demonstrate compliance. Additional training may be required depending on job responsibilities, including OSHA or EPA-related hazardous materials training. Employees should also receive site-specific instruction from their employer, covering company procedures, equipment use, safety policies, and emergency response practices. This training should be documented and aligned with workplace-specific hazards.
