Training Process

A complete DOT Hazardous Materials training curriculum must cover several critical areas to ensure compliance. This includes General Awareness training, which may be basic or advanced, along with Function-specific and Modal-specific training. Security awareness training is required to help personnel identify and respond to potential threats. Safety awareness training will be added in future updates. Where applicable, employees may also need in-depth security training or driver training for motor vehicle operators. Hazmat employers must train, test, and certify all Hazmat Employees within 90 days of hire. Initial training is also required for employees taking on new hazmat-related responsibilities. Until they are trained, employees may perform hazardous materials functions only under direct supervision. DOT mandates retraining and testing at least once every three years, while FAA air carrier employees require training every two years. Employers must maintain comprehensive training records for both DOT and FAA compliance. Depending on the employee’s job role, employers may require OSHA, EPA, or other hazardous materials response training. In addition to third-party instruction, site-specific training should be provided by the employer. This training focuses on company procedures for hazard prevention, the proper use of site-specific equipment, health and safety policies, and emergency response procedures. All site-specific training should be thoroughly documented.
